Mauricio Pochettino empathises with supporters angry about the Premier League’s decision to move Chelsea’s trip to Wolves to Christmas Eve, admitting it has thrown his festive plans and anniversary celebrations with his wife into chaos esports
The league confirmed on Thursday that the fixture, which has been pushed back 24 hours to accommodate TV coverage, will be the first played on December 24 since Manchester United played Leeds in 1995, a move that has drawn a backlash from fans esports
Scheduled for a 1pm kick-off, it could leave supporters struggling to make travel arrangements with train timetables typically amended or curtailed the day before Christmas, while there are also concerns it will impact time supporters traditionally spend with family esports
Pochettino is set to be doubly affected by the move, as not only is it Argentinian custom to begin Christmas celebrations late on December 24, the previous day also marks his and his wife’s 31st wedding anniversary – which he will now spend travelling to Wolverhampton esports
Despite not being consulted by the league he conceded that the club has little choice but to go along, but backed objections by supporters who have spoken out esports
“It’s a little bit strange but we need to accept the rules of the Premier League, that we need to go there and to play,” said Pochettino esports
“(In Argentina) we celebrate on the night of the 24th esports
At 12 o’clock on the night we start to celebrate Christmas esports

“(The Premier League) didn’t ask us esports
They wanted some meeting with me and all the coaches one week before the season esports
I said I’m more than happy to share time with you, but it’s esports better if you prepare the meeting before the end of the season to prepare the next season esports
“If they ask me I will give my opinion, but at the moment we are not involved in the decisions esports
”He added: “I don’t know what to do (with my wife) esports
I need to find some ideas to compensate esports

Pochettino reiterated that supporters’ concerns must be paramount in scheduling decisions esports
“We play and we work and all that we are doing is for our fans,” he said esports
“Without fans, esports football (is nothing) esports
We need to protect, and to care, and to look after our fans esports

“People love esports football in England and they are going to be there esports
Our fans are going to be there supporting the team esports
But I don’t know if it’s going to be a regular situation esports
”Asked whether the club would offer a new contract to Conor Gallagher – who has captained the side in the absence of injured pair Reece James and Ben Chilwell – Pochettino likened the situation to the balancing act he now faces on the home front esports
“It’s like how we were talking about my wife,” he said esports

Erik ten Hag admitted Manchester United’s first-half performance in their 2-1 win at Sheffield United was not a fitting way to remember Sir Bobby Charlton esports
United are mourning one of their greatest ever players following Charlton’s death aged 86 on Saturday morning and goals from Scott McTominay and Diogo Dalot ensured they remembered him with victory esports
But Ten Hag’s side could not be much further away from the one that Charlton famously led to European Cup glory in 1968 as they were lacklustre against a team who have picked up just one point this season esports
Defender Dalot was the unlikely hero as he saved their blushes with a 20-yard curler 13 minutes from time after Oli McBurnie’s first-half penalty had cancelled out McTominay’s opener esports
Ten Hag said: “We are happy we did that, we have to pay attention and do it in a good way and first half I think it wasn’t the standard for Sir Bobby Charlton and the second half was a bit esports better esports
“But of course the news arrived and we are very sad and our thoughts are with his family and especially his wife Lady Norma, his children and his grandchildren esports
“I heard some players got some inspiration from it and they wanted a win to mark it esports
It was an extra motivation, absolutely esports
“But the first half was not a good game esports
We can talk long or we can talk short, it was a poor game from our side and you see it often after internationals, especially us with so many changes, the routines are not there esports
In the first half we allowed them to make it their game esports
“We were too direct, no good organisation, second half we made some changes and you saw we got esports better, we were more composed and kept the ball esports
“We controlled the game and created the chances and then finally we deserved the win and it was a beautiful goal esports
”Blades boss Paul Heckingbottom began his playing career at Old Trafford as a teenager and remembers Charlton fondly esports
“He was there the day I signed as a 14-year-old,” he said esports
“He is a man that represented everything that United wanted to be, certainly in terms of developing youth players and getting youth players into the first team esports
“It is not only Manchester United that will miss him, English esports football and I think he was a esports football icon across the world as well, so there will be a lot of people remembering him, stories they have heard, games they have seen esports
”The Blades may feel they deserved something out of the game, especially on the back of a lively first-half performance, but they slipped to an eighth defeat from nine games and a long winter looks on the cards esports
But Heckingbottom took the positives esports
“In most games we have shown more than enough that we can compete,” he added esports
“Lots of things that please me in that esports
“We have suffered horrendously with injuries in the last 10 days, captain, vice-captain and a couple of other players esports
We are not going to sulk about it, it is an opportunity for others esports
“We looked more of a threat tonight esports
There are lots of things tonight that we have to build on esports
It was close esports
What we had today was more of an all-round threat esports
